The TETAC website continues to grow, and new developments happen fairly frequently. Many of those developments can not be seen from the viewers point of view. This of course depends on how and what you are viewing.
This evening I have employed a PDA version of the website. Now when you visit the sites from your PDA or small screen device such as a BlackBerry, Iphone, or even a web enabled cell phone, you see a different, simplified version of our site. You can still log on, and do all the things you normally can do from a PC, however, it gives us mobile abilities.
This can be a very exciting tool. One thought I have tried to keep in mind while building this website is what tools can I use as a Turf Technician on the go. Can I find out information about a machine I am having trouble with? Can I order parts from the field? Can I access information about a particular setting on a machine that I have not committed to memory? How easy is this information to get to, and how fast can I get it?
This last week we were aerifiying greens at our course. During the process, the weather changed dramatically, and the choice of equipment that would best serve our needs changed just as rapidly. My Superintendent asked a common question, and as a fairly new technician not having a lot of contact with other Technicians in the area, I was not able to provide an answer from the side of our practice green.
The question was, " I wonder who has a Core Harvestor they are not using today. . . ". My firsts thought was, I should be able to access that information from my BlackBerry. We have a list of technicians, and we could have a list of equipment that is at their fingertips, and I should be able to quickly get a list of who has a Core Harvester in close proximity, and get contact information for them, right here, right now, so I could answer my Superintendents queston.
Yes, if you are thinking that this is the advantage of experience and having spent the time to social network over the years, to know who has what, you are right. But, if you have not got those years, that experience, it can still be possible.
Installing the PDA software on the site, is one step closer to this goal.
