Saturday Update

What a mess we had yesterday. Heidi and I struggled for several hours trying to post a new document and have it not only show up, but also have it not 404.  It was really odd, we would create a new category, a new section, a new article, publish the article, and it would show up on the front page. If you tried to click the title name to go to the article, or a link we put on the bottom of the page, you would get a big 404.

I searched the web looking for some sort of solutions from hacks possibly. Nothing, well several things in code changing, none of which worked.

I finally read an article suggesting the use of a Joomla plugin called sh404SEF. I searched and found it on the Joomla extensions site. The extension basically takes over the SEF (search engine friendly) URL renaming feature that Joomla is installed with.

The catch was, that in sh404SEF's control panel is an option to NOT use the .htaccess file that Apache uses when renaming web URLs.

I had tried just about everything. What I could do was turn off the installed SEF under site/global/SEF, and it would function normal when publishing, and viewing new postings, What it would not do is give friendly URLs, which is important for the search engines. With sh404SEF turned on, and .htaccess turned off, the Joomla SEF turned back on, everything worked great!! No hacks!!

So now, we can create new Sections, Categorys, and post new articles with no issue!!
